'The losses already caused by Brexit in 2018,' was the key agenda item at a meeting of the newly appointed Executive Committee of Algfuturo.
The committee concluded that, "talking about the problems of Brexit in the tourism sector is talking about the Algarve, since two thirds of the nights spent by UK citizens are in the Algarve. Also, of the total overnight stays of foreigners in hotels in the Algarve, about 40% are from the UK."
With Brexit in mind, the committee commented that if the tourist flow from the United Kingdom eases off, the Algarve will suffocate economically and socially.
The committee members drew attention to the "absolute urgency" in defining and executing substantive promotional measures in the region.
"The expected drop in overnight stays in the Algarve by foreigners last year was around 600,000, led by the British, which is a very serious warning," said the executive.
Another topic covered was the problems in Monchique that have yet to be resolved with much of the clean up and rebuilding, after last year's fire, still to be done.
Algfuturo said that a revitalisation plan is essential and will meet with officials and associations.
