The Prime Minister has stated this Wednesday that the country cannot cope with another lockdown period of confinement if it becomes necessary to limit the spread of Covid-19, warning that the time is "very short" for society to prepare itself for the coming winter season.
"There is one thing we know: We cannot repeat the confinement that we had to impose during the period of the state of emergency and in the following weeks, because society, families and people will not be able to bear to go through it again", declared Costa. Faced with the possibility of a second wave of Covid-19 in the coming months, the executive leader said that the work of adapting society "must be done now, because there is still some time away to avoid the worst" next fall and winter.
"Time is very short, maybe we can't do everything, but we really have to roll up our sleeves and do our best to ensure the continuity of the functioning of our society, namely schools, companies and public administration services, even in a condition as or more adverse as the one we experienced in March. We have to accelerate this process ", Costa added.
"The science isn’t guaranteed, but we only know that our intuition tells us that in winter there is usually less immunity in the population. It is no coincidence that in winter there are more patients than in summer, more flu than in summer. We must wish for the best, but we have to prepare for the worst with what we already know today ", he insisted.
The prime minister acknowledged that society, in general, is now more disciplined in the face of dealing with the realities of a pandemic, with "masks, disinfectant gel, and physical distancing".
"All services and companies are better organized to ensure these conditions are met. We have to use the European resources available, we have to accelerate and raise the ambition of what we can and should do. This is another trial of time that is running and that we cannot lose," he concluded.
