It is rumoured that Facebook is considering changing the company name, to reflect the tech giant's ambition to 'build the metaverse' and be recognised as more than just a social media network and the evils associated with that.
According to The Verge website, which cites anonymous sources close to the technology giant, Facebook intends to implement this change as early as next week. Apparently, the founder and CEO of Facebook, Mark Zuckerberg, will discuss the topic at the annual Connect conference, which takes place on October 28th.
The rebrand would likely position the Facebook app as one of many products under a parent company overseeing groups like Instagram, WhatsApp, Oculus, and more. In 2015, Google reorganized entirely under a holding company called Alphabet, partly to signal that it was no longer just a search engine, but a sprawling conglomerate with companies. It is thought that founder and CEO of Facebook, Mark Zuckerberg, plans to do similar.
So far, no official Facebook source has confirmed or denied these rumors of a name change.
The potential new Facebook company name is apparently a closely-guarded secret, not even known widely among its senior leadership.
