Fog closes Faro airport

easyjetThick fog in the Algarve this morning, Sunday 13 April, caused the re-routing of five flights heading to Faro airport.

Expecting to land on a bright and sunny Sunday morning, hundreds of holidaymakers ended up in Seville or Jerez da la Frontera in Spain.

A spokesman at Portugal's French-owned airports operator ANA said that “There were five flights that had to be diverted, three to Seville and two to Jerez de La Frontera," but by mid-morning everything was back to normal at Faro airport as the weather had cleared.

The two easyJet flights, two Thomson Airways flights and one flight from Aer Lingus were unable to land due to “the low clouds and visibility was very poor at that time at the airport," said ANA.

The aircraft had started off at the crack of dawn from Gatwick, Stansted, Liverpool and Dublin and were scheduled to land between 08.00 and 09.30am.
