Two women, a mother and daughter aged 75 and 47, died yesterday morning after being run over on the EN125, in the Quatro Estradas area, towards Faro/Albufeira.
The accident happened at 07:37am, causing the immediate death of the victims, just a few metres from their house and the Quatro Estradas roundabout.
Onlookers who saw the tragedy unfold prevented the driver of the vehicle from leaving the scene until the GNR arrived.
It is thought the victims had been depositing rubbish in the bin when the vehicle, heading in the opposite direction, lost control and collided with the victims. The vehicle overturned, causing only minor injuries to the driver, who was later transported to the hospital.
The GNR Traffic Accidents Nucleus is now working to investigate the causes of the fatal collision.
Traffic in the area was restricted for more than two and a half hours.
