The GNR have arrested two people “in the middle of the A22 motorway, near Loulé” and seized more than 39 kilograms of hashish and 255 doses of cocaine.
The vehicle and the occupants were intercepted by the GNR as part of an operation initiated by the Spanish Civil Guard.
The detainees, a couple, aged 37 and 38, were detected by Spanish police, in Spain, “in a vehicle with suspicious behavior and movement”, and the authorities found that “they were travelling to Portugal” said the GNR in a statement.
Following the exchange of information between the Spanish and Portuguese police, the Guarda Nacional Republicana (GNR) “set up a police device, composed of elements of the criminal investigation, traffic and intervention valences”, with a view to intercepting the vehicle.
The GNR seized 39,317 kilograms of hashish (around 78,000 individual doses), 255 doses of cocaine, two mobile phones, 130 euros in cash and the vehicle the couple were driving.
The detainees, arrested for the crime of drug trafficking, will be presented to the Court of Faro.
