A total of 100 GNR officers have been involved since March 2021, to dismantle a family network of loan sharks, who lent money at “high interest” to then extort their 'customers', terrorising them with threats.
They claimed dozens of victims, but the scale of the scheme is still being determined.
Yesterday, at 5pm the operation 'Camatar' ('loan shark', in Romanian) began and just an hour later, the arrest of five people was announced.
Three men and two women, aged between 27 and 53, couples, siblings and children, formed this fraudulent network. They were working in Alter do Chão, Portalegre, and neighbouring municipalities. However, a couple and one of the men were caught by the GNR in Albufeira, where they were enjoying a holiday!
