Thousands of traffic police are patrolling Portugal’s roads this Easter weekend to ‘deter traffic accidents,’ while at the same time checking drivers’ documents and fitness to drive.
An estimated 5,500 GNR officers are on extra duties until midnight on Sunday but have already had to deal with 181 accidents, six seriously injured and one fatality.
According to data at the end of day one of the Easter operation, there were 52 fewer accidents than over the same period last year, and one less death.
