Two surgeons at Faro hospital have been suspended for six months, following the allegations of bad practices made in April by an internal doctor, Diana Pereira.
A complaint filed in April by the internal physician, Diana Pereira, states “11 cases that occurred between January and March”, at the Faro hospital of “error/negligence” in the surgery service.
According to Diana Pereira, of the 11 cases she reported, three patients died, two were hospitalised at the time in intermediate care. The rest had bodily injuries associated with alleged medical errors.
Chairman of the Order of Physicians (Ordem dos Médicos), Carlos Cortes, explained the reason why the two surgeons were suspended "obviously, for the safety of patients". It is also to allow the disciplinary board to continue to carry out the internal analysis of the various cases that, at the time, were denounced.
At the same time, the OM have created an independent commission, composed of five surgeons. That commission is “analyzing in a more in-depth way, from a technical-scientific point of view, all these cases”, said the president.
“As soon as they have all this information compiled, they will send it to the disciplinary board so that it can assess it more thoroughly and, where appropriate, apply the appropriate sanctions”, he explained.
Carlos Cortes “congratulated the excellent work carried out” by the Disciplinary Council of the Southern Region. Cortes considers that he demonstrated “great rigor and unprecedented speed” in these situations.
"The disciplinary board, autonomously and independently, will continue, I believe, to analyze these processes and then it will give more indications about the conclusions of this same process", he said.
At the time the complaints were made, the Health Regulatory Entity (ERS) and the General Inspection of Health Activities (IGAS) announced that they would investigate the alleged negligence in the surgery service of the hospital in Faro to “complete clarification” of the situation .
These denunciations also led the Public Prosecutor's Office to initiate an investigation, which is taking place in the Department of Investigation and Criminal Action (DIAP) in Faro.
