Twenty-one municipalities across the country, six in the Algarve, are unsurprisingly on maximum fire alert this week, according to the Portuguese Institute of the Sea and the Atmosphere (IPMA), due to the hot weather.
The municipalities currently listed as highest risk of rural fire are Lagos, Portimão, Silves, Loulé, São Brás de Alportel and Tavira.
More than 100 municipalities on the mainland are in the next category down, very high risk of fire.
Due to the hot weather all week, the fire danger will remain high at least until Friday.
The calculations are obtained from the air temperature, relative humidity, wind speed and amount of precipitation in the last 24 hours.
Since the beginning of this year, the 3784 rural fires have already affected 8710 hectares of rural land.
