As of tomorrow, Tuesday 11th July 2023, the obligation to affix your car insurance stamp to the windscreen of your vehicle ends.
The new legislation published in Diário da República reads, “The present law eliminates the obligation to display the motor insurance label and proceeds with the second amendment of Decree-Law No. by Decree-Law No. 153/2008, of August 6”.
Parliament approved this amendment on June 2nd, and added some points to the article of the law that defines the rules for issuing insurance documents.
Insurance documents may be issued and made available through electronic means, "without prejudice to their issuance and availability on paper, without additional costs, at the request of the policyholder or, where applicable, the insured person, or in cases where they do not have , demonstrably, of adequate electronic means for the safe transmission and reception of the same”.
These electronic documents will “replace the paper insurance certificate”.
The bill was presented by the Liberal Initiative party (IL), who highlighted reasons for this initiative in a statement, saying, “In a historical context of strong financial restrictions, we do not see it as proportional or justified that the State charges hundreds of euros just for forgetting a simple paper that only transmits information that is already in the possession of who fines”.
Until tomorrows' new legislation becomes applicable, fines for not displaying an insurance stamp on the windscreen ranged between 250 and 1,250 euros.
