Tons of cocaine found nestled with pineapples

cocainePolice in Spain have seized some 2.5 tons of cocaine which arrived in the country in a shipment of pineapples from Costa Rica.

"This is one of the biggest seizures carried out in European Union ports," the police statement said.

The cocaine was in 2,296 packages tucked among the fruit in a shipping container that entered the Mediterranean port of Algeciras.

A tip-off enabled the official to track the shipment as it was transported to a warehouse in Madrid where they pounced.

Six people in the Madrid suburb of Valdemoro were arrested.

The authorities gave no estimate for the street value of the cocaine but online newspaper El Confidencial estimated it was worth over €150 million.
