The GNR today announced the seizure of approximately 30 kilos of hashish pollen and the arrest of two men, one of whom is serving in the Portuguese Navy.
The drugs were being taken in a high-powered car to Lisbon from the Algarve but the dim-witted couriers chose to start their journey at 2.00am in the morning, immediately drawing the maximum attention to themselves.
A GNR police patrol from Olhão stopped the vehicle in the Moncarapacho area, found the shipment and arrested the men, finding also a loaded Glock pistol.
The GNR said today that the detainees are 27 and 31-years old and suggested that the high value drug consignment was en route to Lisbon where detainees are residents.
Olhão continues to vie with Vilamoura as the drug centre of the Algarve but with recent drug arrests across the Algarve region the police appear to be keeping abreast of the smugglers' ever-changing importation and distribution routes.
Both men were due in court in Olhão today for their fate to be decided.
