Algarve's seafood festivals start this weekend

octopus2Lonely Planet has been searching for the top 50 places for a getaway in Europe and the western Algarve’s Vila do Bispo is on the list,

"Seafood lovers should not miss the opportunity to visit this village in the south of Portugal," reads the guide which highlights seafood as one of the reasons to visit, especially the barnacle which the publication warns is unappealing to look at but tastes like ‘a kiss from the sea.’

Octopus cooked in various ways, such as fried, grilled, or in cataplanas will be available in 15 restaurants in the municipality of Odemira during Octopus Gourmet Week which starts on Saturday 7th June.

The culinary initiative promoted by Odemira council will run until June 13 and covers restaurants in the Longueira, Odemira, Vila Nova de Milfontes and  Zambujeira do Mar.

These octopus treats also will be available in five restaurants at the Feira Nacional de Turismo Ativo e Desportivo, which takes place this coming weekend in Vila Nova de Milfontes.

The snail festival in Castro Marim is introducing an unmissable new recipe to draw in the crowds, ‘pasteis de nata’ filled with snails.

The delicacy is one of the novelties of the 2014 edition of the International Festival of the Snail in Castro Marim which returns to Colina do Revelim de Santo António this Friday to Sunday.

Over the three days of the festival, 14 bars will prepare three thousand litres of snails in the Algarve style and also using suggestions from chefs from France, Spain, Italy and Morocco.

The snail-filled pastel de nata may be viewed with a degree of suspicion by the many foreigners that are expected to attend, especially from Spain but it has become a newsworthy item with which to promote this popular event.
