A fire in countryside next to the Autódromo Internacional do Algarve at Escampadinho in the parish of Mexilhoeira Grande, Portimão was finally put out at 07.00 on Monday morning after a night of concern and effort from firefighters.
The blaze started at 17.20 on a Sunday afternoon that saw temperatures in the mid to high 30s, and was tackled by 200 firefighters backed by 52 vehicles at the fire's peak.
The flames threatened various detached properties but these were saved by the quick response of fire crews who managed to intercept the path of the flames, ensuring residents were evacuated and properties were protected.
Isilda Gomes, mayor of Portimão said on Sunday night that the fire was out of control, and that fighting the flames was complicated "by the very difficult access."
A warehouse was burned down and some machinery damaged but there have been no reported casualties. The fire was stared by a malfunctioning machine being used to clear the area to prevent fires.
