Praia da Marinha beach in the municipality of Lagoa has been named one of the world’s '20 Most Stunning Cliffside Beaches' by CNN, the American news service.
The Algarve favourite was the only beach in Portugal to be featured by CNN which commented, “sandy stretches that meander slowly and serenely into gentle waves are lovely.
"But that's not the kind of beach that makes your knees buckle and has you reaching for your camera before you've got the sunscreen on your nose.
"Instead, head for beaches where cliffs tower over the shore. Finding your way to the sand at these spots is often no easy feat. You'll probably need to hike, climb or boat in, and some of these beaches are not recommended for swimming.
But what you trade in approachability is offset by the wow factor.
"Beaches that cozy up to cliffs provide settings that stick with you, in far more than a sand-in-your-shorts kind of way.”
Praia da Marinha was ranked 16th in thw world. The top choice was Maya Bay, Ko Phi Phi, in Thailand.
Praia da Marinha is renowned as one of the most emblematic and beautiful beaches of Portugal and considered by the Michelin Guide as one of the 10 most beautiful beaches in Europe and as one of the 100 most beautiful beaches in the world.
In 1998, it was also awarded with the distinguished "Golden Beach" award by the Portuguese Ministry of the Environment because of its outstanding natural qualities. Furthermore, many pictures of this beach have been used in promotional material and "Guides of Portugal" distributed around the world.
This beach is not only for its beautiful cliffs, but also for the high quality of the water. Marinha Beach has often been used by international advertising agencies and by television producers in advertising campaigns.
