Mobile phone tax raised

musicThe government has approved and signed off an amendment to Portugal´s Private Copying law which aims to increase the tax revenue from the sale of mobile phones, tablets, sticks and hard drives and pass them on the artists.

 

The amendments follow the signing of the original law passed last January.

"Our estimate is that the revenue from this tax will be between €15 and €20 million which can be distributed to copyright owners, according to Jorge Barreto Xavier, Portugal´s Secretary of State for Culture, at today´s press conference. 

 

According to a report into where the revenue will end up, 40% will go to authors, 30% to artists and performers and 30% to producers of music and video recordings.
