Gibraltar is home to one of the busiest supermarket in the Morrisons chain, always in the top 10 in terms of sales.
Its coveted place as The Rock’s only major supermarket has helped it consistently attract residents for the last 20 years.
In addition, expats from Spain and cruise ship voyagers join the local population in heading to Morrisons for groceries and perhaps a little something from its own licensed bar.
Morrisons, the fourth largest supermarket chain in the UK, has entered a price war with others in the ‘Big Four’ supermarkets to stave off the dents being made by discounters such as Aldi and Lidl.
It branch in Gibraltar started out first as Lipton’s, then Presto, followed by a revamp into a Safeway supermarket in 1994. Morrisons bought it in 2004 and spends £4m every year to supply goods to the Gibraltar store, but this amount surely must be recovered in the prices charged in its Gibraltar outlet.
One of its best selling items? Heinz baked beans, of course.
