A young male driver died and four were injured in a crash on the notorious Tunes section of the IC1 in the Algarve late this morning.
One of the four injured is said to be in a serious condition by hospital staff in Faro.
Speaking on the lunchtime news Captain Bruno Carvalho of the GNR said it was too early to say how the accident had happened although there seems to have been a head on collision on a bend in the road as the young man overtook another vehicle.
The accident occurred at about 11.42 am and firefighters from São Bartolomeu de Messines soon were at the scene along with the GNR and staff from the National Institute of Medical Emergency (INEM).
Three of the injured were transported by ambulance to Faro hospital, the fourth most seriously injured was taken by helicopter.
The last fatal accident on this stretch of road was on Boxing Day last year involving three vehicles. One man died at the scene and five were injured.
This accident happened due to a "miscalculation" by the driver who was overtaking while heading north. The driver attempting this maneuver was the one that died.
The accident today bears many similarities.
