So far this year more than 3,000 desperate people have died trying to cross the Mediterranean in their quest to reach Europe.
The International Organisation for Migration also said that Europe is considered the most dangerous destination for migrants to reach.
Worldwide, 4,077 migrants have died in transit already this year. This means that the 3,072 deaths in Europe account for 75% of the total.
The organisation said that some observers believe the real total could be three times as high.
This year's total is more than double the previous peak in 2011, and exceeds last year's estimate over four times.
Earlier this month, a migrant boat with 500 people on board sank near Malta. It was one of the worst migrant drownings recorded as only nine are thought to have survived.
Two Palestinian survivors told the IOM that the boat had been sunk intentionally by traffickers after a “violent confrontation” on board sometime after leaving Egypt.
The IOM believes that more than 40,000 migrants have died since 2000 of whom 22,000 were trying to reach Europe.
