Man drowns off Carvoeiro beach

carvoeirobeachA 65-year old man drowned in the sea off Carvoeiro beach this morning, as confirmed by the commander of the Port of Portimão, Santos Pereira.

A warning was given to the authorities at 10.06 by a member of the group of tourists that the man belonged to.

Carvoeiro beach had no lifeguard as the concession has closed and the sea was dangerously rough for swimmers.

The man was pulled from the sea by the Ferragudo lifeboat crew who tried to resuscitate him but he was declared dead by the National Medical Emergency Institute (INEM) team which attended to him on the shore.

The party of Portuguese holidaymakers had been enjoying a break at the Hotel Carvoeiro Sol on a trip organised by INATEL.

There was no lack of support as the incident was attended by the ambulance from Portimão with basic life support equipment, ambulances from the Bombeiros in Lagoa and Portimão, the GNR and the Maritime police .

The dead man was from Penafiel near Oporto.
