Jobless rate falls but millions still without work

unemployedThe unemployment rate in the eurozone was stable at 11.5%, unchanged from September, according to Eurostat.

This has left 18,395,000 people in the euro region without paid employment, of whom 688,000 were in Portugal.

The percentage of unemployed people in Portugal is reported to have dropped from 15.6% in October 2013 to 13.4% this October, according to data compiled by Eurostat.

Compared with a year ago, the greatest decreases in the eurozone were reported by Portugal, followed by Spain (26% to 24%) and Greece (27.8% to 25.9%).

Despite the fall, Portugal has the fourth highest rate in the eurozone, coming after Greece, Spain and Cyprus and just a whisker ahead of Italy.

In Germany, the October rate fell slightly to 4.9% from the month before, and remained unchanged in France at 10.5%.

But in Italy, the eurozone's third largest economy, the rate hit a new record, jumping to 13.2% from 12.9% in September.

Young people in the region still suffer limited prospects as the rate barely changed during the year, dropping from 24% across the region in October 2013 to 23.5% in October 2014.

The highest rates were in Spain (53.8%) and Greece (49.3%).

Portugal’s rate is still high at 33.3% but at least it has dropped from 37% in October last year. This still means that 126,000 young people below the age of 25 had no jobs in October.
