Yesterday’s arrest of alleged computer hackers from the underground group Anonymous has sparked more hack attacks from remaining cyber warriors, this time on the websites of the Institute of Social and Political Sciences at the University of Lisbon, and of the Attorney General’s office.
Early on Friday morning the Meo.Extreme and NyAnonymous groups attacked these two websites and claimed to have shut them down overnight, although both were running as normal this morning.
Details of the attacks were posted on Facebook.
Claiming "Anonymous is immortal" the cyber attackers demanded immediate freedom for those members of Anonymous arrested by the Judicial Police on Thursday, adding "they cannot arrest an idea!"
The police action resulted in seven people being arrested on suspicion of dozens of computer attacks on websites last year. The founder of the well-known Tugaleaks website, journalist Rui Cruz, also was arrested. Fourteen others were names as arguidos.
On Thursday night, Anonymous Portugal issued a statement, "This communication exists because the Anonymous were portrayed by the media as criminals and this is the right of reply that the law gives us."
“The cyber attacks on university and government websites will continue until they are released,” the group said on its Facebook page.
‘Anonymous Portugal’ has been the bane of many public bodies since early 2011 and has managed to hack into supposedly secure sites causing much embarrassment to government departments and some businesses.
