Polis Litoral Southwest has received the go-ahead for 8 contracts at beaches, fishing harbours, and smaller coastal villages in the southwest Alentejo and the Costa Vicentina, an a cost of €3.9 million.
"The contracts will help the coastal areas of the southwest Alentejo and the Costa Vicentina become more resilient and also enhance the areas’ tourism potential and economies," said the the Secretary of State for the Environment, Paulo Lemos.
According to Lemos, as he signed the orders in Beja at the office of Polis Litoral Southwest, the contracts will improve bathing areas and villages which in turn "will help economic activity."
According to Polis Litoral Southwest, the works will take place in the municipalities of Santiago do Cacém, Sines and Beja, in the Alentejo coast, and Lagos in the Algarve.
The works will cover, among aother areas, Zambujeira do Mar (Beja) and the beach at Odeceixe (Aljezur).
The money comes from the EU, the Ministry of Environment and Spatial Planning and the local authorities concerned and is part of the rehabilitation and recovery plan for 150 kilometers of seashore along the Alentejo and Vicentina coasts, part of an verall €40.1 million spend.
