The prices of electricity and gas have gone up across all the countries in the euro area, including Portugal.
The measurement was taken between the second half of 2013 and the second half of 2014.
During that time, prices went up 2.7% reaching an average of €22.1 per 100kWh. The average tax included in the price was 36%.
How did Portugal compare? Prices rose by 4.7% making 100kWh cost €22.3. Taxes, however, were a big chunk, namely 42%.
The cost was the sixth highest in the eurozone, after Germany, Ireland, Spain, Cyprus and Italy.
Portugal’s prices, however, were the third highest when converted into an artificial measure, purchasing power standard, in order to eliminate general price level differences.
Taxes levied varied significantly among countries with the highest (52%) in Germany followed by Portugal’s 42% and the lowest (5%) in Malta and the UK.
Life was no kinder to the Portuguese who use gas. The country had the most expensive gas in Europe.
It also had the greatest increase in price of all eurozone countries, a considerable 11.4%. Spain had the second highest price rise, 7.5% more.
The cost was €10.4 per 100kWh of which 23% was tax.
Surprisingly, the tax was below the 28% average in the euro area.
