British fugitive apprehended in Spain

policestationTwo British bobbies on the beat in Magaluf have had the unexpected bonus of reeling in a British murderer.

Ashley Carlton James, 30, was wanted by police in Britain after breaching the terms of his licence following his release from prison, where he was serving a 10-year sentence for manslaughter.

He was imprisoned in July 2008 following a conviction for his role in the murder of Uriel Johnson, a student, who was stabbed to death.

James was eventually granted parole, but went missing. A European arrest warrant was issued.

West Midlands Police officers, PC Martina Anderson and Sergeant Brett Williams, had been detailed to the party resort of Magaluf and to Ibiza for some weeks over summer to deal with problems caused by inebriated Brits.

They were asked to assist with an incident of domestic abuse, but found that the male suspect had fled. Their curiosity provoked, they investigated further and discovered the warrant.

They helped track him down to a new address in the Calvia district, close to Magaluf. He was arrested by the Spanish Civil Guard who acknowledged the arrest resulted from the cooperation of the two British police.

James is being held in Madrid while awaiting extradition to the UK.
