Portugal voted world's top golfing destination

golfPortugal has grabbed the top award amid stiff competition for the best golfing destination in the world at the World Travel Award 2013

The Algarve, which already had been voted the 'Best Golf Destination in Europe’ in September 2013, has now won the worldwide accolade, becoming the world’s best golf destination 2013.

Other notable successes were the Conrad Algarve which from a standing start has won award after award in various competitions, and Villa Joya which received awards for ‘Best Leisure Resort & Spa’ and' Best Boutique Resort' and which has been voted the 'Best Boutique Resort' for eight consecutive years.

In 2013 Portugal had 15 nominations and managed to win in five categories, while in 2012 Portugal won in three.

The Algarve was in the running for best beach destination in the world, having been voted the best European beach destination, but the prize was taken by Grace Bay Beach, Turks and Caicos, in the Caribbean.

Other winners were the The Vine project in Madeira which won the category 'Best Hotel Design’ and ‘Parques de Sintra - Monte da Lua' which was considered best company in the conservation category.

The annual World Travel Awards are considered the most important awards in the tourism industry worldwide with regional heats followed by the final event, this year in Qatar.

The impact on tourism from these awards is thought to be significant with many checking and researching destinations on the internet before booking.
