A car skidded, left the road and flipped over in the early hours of Sunday morning near Ferreiras, north of Albufeira, leaving the driver dead and his son seriously injured, according to the local GNR.
The driver Rui Vale, 50, (pictured below) was the father of the 18-year-old who was rushed to Faro hospital where his condition is described as serious.
The skid, followed by the car turning over, occurred at about 3:50 on the EN269, on the route between Algoz and Ferreiras.
The GNR, firefighters from Albufeira, an ambulance, and specialist teams from the INEM rushed to the scene but could not save the man’s life.
There also was a fatal hit and run accident on Saturday on the EN125 in Espiche. The police are seeking witnesses.
Serious accidents in the Algarve have increased 300% from January 1 to November 21 with 8,646 incidents, although the number of fatal accidents has dropped.
In 2005, there were 2,386 serious accidents in the Algarve, i.e. those that caused injuries, with 74 deaths and 303 serious injuries.
Ten years later there have been 8,646 accidents in the year so far, resulting in the death of 33 people and 153 seriously injured.
