The GNR so afr has logged 463 accidents and one death on Portugal’s roads during Operation Carnival 2016 which ends on Tuesday.
Between midnight on Friday and 2pm on Sunday, the rash of road traffic accidents left one dead and eight seriously injured.
The operation fielded more police patrols and many more road inspections than usual on most major routes, especially on those roads that lead to carnival venues.
The GNR command said officers are looking to spot the depressingly normal infractions, including speeding, driving under the influence of alcohol and psychotropic substances, the non-use of seat belts and using a mobile phone while driving. Those lacking a driving license can expect no mercy.
Until 2pm today the GNR had stopped a total of 9,527 drivers, 120 of which were drunk and 18 did not have the legal right to drive.
Also caught were 1,121 drivers of speeding cars and 327 with a higher alcohol level than allowed by law, but not completely blotto.
As for the reckless stupidity of those not wearing a seatbelt or not having a car seat for their children, 2,833 drivers were booked.
Last year in Operation Carnival there were 942 accidents, three deaths, 10 serious injuries and 255 minor injuries so it may be that this year’s totals will come in below the 2015 figures.
With the GNR under pressure to hit their annual road fine targets, drivers can expect continuous roadside inspections this year so are advised to get street legal before risking stiff penalties.
