An accident left five people injured and blocked a section of the Tavira to Messines road for several hours while police emergency services attended to the victims and then cleared the wreckage.
The injured were transported by the ambulance service to Faro Hospital which has yet to announce the severity of the injuries nor the state of the victims.
The EN270 that runs between Tavira and São Bartolomeu de Messines was closed to traffic in both directions at Fonte da Murta from about 16:30 as rain lashed many parts of the Algarve and high winds made driving conditions hazardous.
According to scant information from the District Command for Relief Operations in Faro, the accident was 'due to a collision between two cars' at Fonte da Murta, to the west of São Brás de Alportel.
On-site and providing assistance were GNR officers, bombeiros teams from São Brás de Alportel and Loulé and paramedics from the INEM ambulance service.
