A 74-year-old woman died at 12:15 today after suffered a heart attack on the beach at Olhos de Água, Albufeira. She had just got out of the water after bathing.
Despite resuscitation efforts by lifeguards and subsequently by INEM paramedics and the Maritime Police, she was pronounced dead at the scene.
Just hours later on the west coast, a 54-year-old man died at Malhão Beach, Odemira, also from a heart attack.
This beach does not yet have any lifeguards despite the season having started, but cover is due to be in place from this weekend.
There was help available however with lifeboat personnel, the Marine Police, Odemira Bombeiros and paramedics in a specialist VMER Alentejo Litoral vehicle. All attended but the man died at 16:00.
