A pedestrian walking along the side of the EN125 near Algarve Shopping has been killed in a road traffic incident just after 05.30 on Saturday morning.
The police are keen to trace the driver who failed to stop, having driven into the 41-year-old woman, leaving her severely injured.
Drivers stopped to help the woman and called emergency services. Paramedics tried for an hour to save her life but she died at the roadside.
The GNR registered more than 80 accidents in 12 hours from 20.00 on Saturday night 08.00 on Sunday morning with 30 people injured, four seriously.
There were 43 arrests, of which 34 people were of drivers found to be over the alcohol limit.
This latest hit-and-run brings the total number of deaths on the EN125 to 12 this year.
Update
On July 6th the police announced that two people have been arrested in relation to the woman's death.
