Refugee numbers reaching Germany fell sharply in June, dipping below 5,000 for the entire month.
The total number arriving in Germany during the first six months of this year dwindled to 211,000. This was lower than the numbers reaching Germany during many months in 2015.
Refugee arrivals have been tapering off since the beginning of the year as a result of the closure in March of the overland route through the Balkans and the deal struck with Turkey to readmit migrants who had made it to Greece.
In the cold of January, 92,000 refugees crossed into Germany, dropping to 61,000 in February and then 20,000 in March with a further decline to 16,300 in May.
The reduced numbers are bound to bring some respite to the Migration and Refugees Ministry officials who are trying to process the huge backlog of asylum applications.
Nearly half a million cases are in the queue awaiting decision.
The data show most asylum seekers were from war-racked Syria, followed by refugees from Afghanistan, Iraq and Iran.
