Astronaut Tweets congratulations to Portugal from space

astronautVurtsCongratulations for the Portuguese national football team have poured in from across the globe as the nation celebrates victory over France in the Euro 2016 final last night in Paris.

A message with a difference has been posted on a Twitter page from a NASA astronaut who previously had posted a night-time picture of Portugal, Spain and France.

Terry Virts posted the picture before the game while keen to know the outcome and followed up with the caption "Congratulations Portugal!!!" when the result was received way above the earth.

The record-breaking victory for Portugal is being hailed today as a fine example of teamwork as, with Cristiano Ronaldo out of the game in the first half due to injury, the team meshed together to win the European football championship against the match favourites, France.

Virts has yet to watch the game but is keen to do so when he returns to earth.

For entirely Gallic reasons, the Eiffel Tower was not lit up in Portugal’s colours last night but showed instead the colours of the losing country, a break from the Euro 2016 tradition that many see as deliberately provocative and may have inflamed the protestors gather at the site during and after the game.

Star Wars actor Harrison Ford was pictured in the crowd at the Marquês de Pombal square in Lisbon last night, grinning with delight with a Portugal scarf across his shoulders.

Other stars present included Mick Jagger, rooting for Portugal along with two of his children.
