Hand grenade found in a Faro street

grenadeA hand grenade was spotted on Thursday afternoon, July 21st, lying in Residencial Avenida, Faro near a bus depot.

The Public Security Police Explosives Deactivation team was called and the area cordoned off by police with the fire service standing by.

After 90 minutes, officers concluded that the ordinance was not dangerous as it almost certainly was a deactivated training grenade.

The discovery necessitated the creation of a wide security area and the diversion of traffic.

An explosives expert, kitted out in special padded clothing, managed to X-ray the grenade in situ and found there was no explosive charge inside.

Taking no chances, the item was picked up using an extendable mechanical arm and was placed in a sealed box and taken away for disposal.

The roads were re-opened at around 19:15 and no theories have been advanced as to why a grenade was lying in the street of the regional capital.
