Dead whale recovered in Sagres - rare sighting of fin whales off Armação de Pêra

whalehumpbackA dead whale found by a diver in the waters off Praia do Tonel, Sagres has been collected by a marine tourist boat, brough to harbour and brought ashore by dockside cranes (see picture below).

The local Maritime Police Commander for Lagos and the Sagres Lifeguard Station commander coordinated an operation to recover the adult whale which then was taken away for disposal on land, having checked this out with the Institute for Nature Conservation.

Three miles off Armação de Pêra, three 14 to 16-metre-long whales were spotted on Sunday at 14:00 by tour operator Dream Wave whose compliment of 80 (crew and tourists) were able to follow the whales and observe them at close quarters.

This is the first time that fin whales have been sighted by the company which in the past has treated passengers to sightings of various species of cetaceans; the common dolphin (Delphinus delphis) the bottlenose dolphin (Tursiops truncates) three species of baleen whale: minke whales (Balaenoptera acutorostrata), the sei whale (Balaenoptera borealis) and the humpbacked whale (Megaptera novaeangliae) - as seen in the picture above.
