Six Germans have found themselves in trouble this week with Spanish law officials.
A German man has blamed toilet paper for a wildfire on a Canary Island which resulted in the death of a park official and the evacuation of 700 people from their homes.
The unnamed 27-year-old, who is believed to live locally in a cave, was arrested by the Civil Guard on suspicion of starting the blaze.
The fire in the Caldera de Taburiente National Park near La Palma began on Wednesday. It had already engulfed an estimated 1,000 hectares of ancient forest by Thursday afternoon as firefighters struggle to contain it.
The man told the authorities that he had tried to burn the toilet paper he had used in the nature park.
“He said that it was an accident caused when sparks from the burning toilet paper caught dry vegetation,” said an anonymous source related to the investigation, according to newspaper La Razon.
A father of five and official of the environmental department lost his life in the conflagration.
Homes were evacuated around the town of El Paso and some 700 residents were told to shelter in the sports centre until the fire was under control.
Meanwhile, in Catalonia, a group of five young German women are being detained for a stunt on a crowded seafront which sparked a terror alert.
The five, aged between 20 and 25, were acting as supervisors for a group of teenagers on holiday. The prank involved one person posing as a celebrity while the others pretended to be paparazzi chasing her.
To many, the actions seemed like the start of a terror attack.
The event at Platja d’Aro beach resort resulted in a stampede which saw people racing through the streets in tears and fears while others cowered in restaurants.
Eleven people were treated for bruising and panic attacks.
An investigation into alleged public disorder is reported to be underway.
