Being dropped off on a deserted Algarvian beach, inaccessible from land, may be your idea of a blissful afternoon but for one tourist this plan quickly turned into near disaster when he fell seriously ill.
The Ferragudo Lifeboat crew was alerted, located the beach and transported the 52-year-old Portuguese man to the pick-up point at Benagil beach (pictured) from where he was whisked to hospital by a waiting ambulance.
The man had been dropped off on the deserted beach by a tourist boat shortly before suffering what has been described as ‘a sudden illness.’
There was no such luck in the sea near Pontevedra, Galicia in Spain for a 48-year-old Portuguese man from Lisbon who drowned after falling from the stern of a tourist boat last Saturday morning.
The man fell into the water while sneaking off for a quiet cigarette at the rear of the boat.
His wife said he was not a natural swimmer. His lifeless body was found four hours later. The Spanish police are investigating but say that it looks like an unfortunate accident.
