A young woman in her 20s was hit by a train yesterday afternoon (September 1st) at 4.00pm about one kilometre from Portimão station.
The railway line was shut down while emergency services recovered her body. The train has not been able to stop in time and came to a halt some 200 metres from the point of impact.
The Portimão bombeiros, the Judicial Police, and the ambulance service attended the grim scene near Aqua Shopping.
The victim was carrying no identification but had been walking along the railway line "talking on her phone, or listening to music," according to the shocked driver who has been offered psychological support.
An investigation is underway to determine if the woman was merely preoccupied and did not see or hear the Lagos-Portimão train, or if she intentionally had remained on the railway line expecting to die.
