Woman found strangled in Faro

pspA 37-year-old man was arrested by the public security police on Wednesday after a two hour siege at his apartment in Faro.

His partner had been missing for two days and the police suspected some sort of foul play. When they finally managed to get into the apartment they found the body of a 21-year-old woman in the bedroom.

The woman had not been seen and when the landlady noticed blood on the floor she alerted the police who went to the 7th floor in the block of apartments at Plaza José Afonso, near the center of Faro.

The man barricaded himself in for about two hours and waved a gun around on his balcony. He was arrested after patient negotiations conducted by the Judicial Police (PJ) resulted in him allowing access.

PSP officers went into the apartment and found the body of a woman who showed signs of having been strangled.

The couple came from Beja in the Alentejo and had moved together to the Algarve about a year ago despite the woman having made an official complaint of domestic violence.
