"The Movement for an Algarve Free of Oil (MALP) is appealing to the population of the Algarve to raise its collective voice against the António Costa government for having approved, on January 11th, oil exploration off the coast of Aljezur.
MALP considers it indecent that the government has ignored more than 42,000 citizens who came forward during the public consultation and signed a petition against oil and gas exploration by the ENI-GALP consortium.
This shows a complete lack of respect for those citizens who participated.
MALP also questions the government's concept of democracy in a decision that completely ignores the will of the majority of the local population and asks whether there is any point at all in holding public consultations.
MALP also appeals to the population of the Algarve and Alentejo to make its views known through petitions, the occupation of public space and active participation in the upcoming local election campaigns to demand the end to oil exploration and extraction in the Algarve and Alentejo offshore regions.
This citizens movement regrets that local councillors, the mayors group AMAL, the Region's Tourism Associations and other bodies and organisations in the region have been disrespected and their opinions ignored."
