Socialist plans for TAP 'have merit'

tap2António José Seguro is concerned at the continuing instability over the future of state airline TAP and argues that the country should keep the carrier and develop it as a truly Lusophone brand.

The Secretary-General of the Socialist Party said the state should hold onto our 51% stake in TAP but sell smaller blocs of shares to airlines from Lusophone countries including Brazil, Mozambique and Angola.

New BES boss works on branch closure plan

besVítor Bento, the head of Banco Novo which took over the good assets of the collapsed BES banking business, has admitted that part of his plan for the high street lender is for branch closures and associated redundancies.

Bento is preparing a restructuring plan which he says will be ready in three months time which inevitably will involve a cost reduction programme focussing on the bank’s nationwide branch network.

Toll protestors target holiday homes of PM and President

cuvimantarotaA group of protesters gathered this morning near the vacation home of Prime Minister Pedro Passos Coelho to protest against tolls on the A22 and to demand his resignation.

At the gathering in Manta Rota, Vila Real de Santo António, there were more GNR officers than protesters from Cuvi (Commission of Users of the Via do Infante) but this did not dull the intent of seriousness of the commission members acting on behalf of the vast majority of motorists in the region.

Sunday's moon was a ‘supermoon’

bluemoonThe moon was its biggest and brightest for 20 years last night as it reached the point where it was closest to earth (called perigee) at the same time as it became full.

Then on Tuesday, the Perseid meteor shower will climax with a show of “fireballs as bright as Jupiter or Venus”. With optimum conditions, it is usually possible to see more than 100 meteors an hour, but the full moon, however, could make the showers difficult to see.

Foreigners questioned in Olhão over sexual exploitation

olhaomarketThe Foreigners and Borders Service (SEF) today announced that it had identified and questioned 15 people in Olhão in an operation designed to identify those involved in the sexual exploitation of women and international people trafficing.

The stopping and questioning of foreigners took place as part of Operation Safe Summer 2014, which continues until September 15th.

Insider trading during the final hours of BES
