More than 100 local fans watched as the newly formed Carvoeiro United FCCU won their first home game 1-0 against local rivals Mex. Grande FC.
Bad weather in the morning threatened to dampen the spirits of players and fans but the sun came out as the whistle blew for the opening of the game held at the stadium in Estômbar on October 11.
The FCCU players, all local to Carvoeiro and of various nationalities, were hoping for a positive start to their home campaign of the Algarve Football League and during the first half they managed a couple of shots on goal but without reward.
During the second half of the game the pressure to secure a win was mounting but it was a free kick from goal keeper Adam Rafis that put the home team ahead, with the ball avoiding all players on the pitch before bouncing in behind the mystified Mex. Grande FC keeper.
FCCU continued to push forward throughout the second half despite being down to 10 men, while Mex. Grande FC managed to create a couple of scares for the home side, however FCCU finished the game with three points and a clean sheet, building on the success of the previous game which saw them draw 1-1 with Imortal.
Following the second game of the season Carvoeiro United are now in 7th position in the table of 18 teams, with four points.
The next match for FCCU will be away at against SC Farense on October 18.
FCCU are a new team of Portuguese and expat players, many have limited or no previous experience of league football and none of the team, training staff or management receive wages.
The team is currently looking for sponsorship to help cover match costs, if you would like further information about FCCU or sponsorship details, please visit the FC Carvoeiro United Facebook page.
