Facebook allows people to have a (personal) profile and then, from it, if they want to, create a page for their business, institution, or even an artist or public figure page, if that is the case.
Only on a page (and not on a profile) is it possible to use Facebook Ads, that is, the paid advertising part of Facebook, to reach more people. To help you decipher what you have and what you need, think using the following analogy – when you post something on “that Facebook” is it a person in the restaurant who wants to “speak”, or is it the restaurant who wants to “speak”? If the answer is the latter, then you need to create a page.
After confirming that you have a page (or once it has been created), the next step will be to create an ad account on “Business Facebook” (i.e. Facebook’s Business Manager) and from there you can also manage your page (or your pages). You will also have to add a payment option to this account (if you want to advertise, and we guarantee that you will inevitably want that!) that can be local manual payments, direct debit to a bank account, a PayPal account, or a credit or debit card (please note that although we said debit, the last times we did this, we ended up adding a credit card, as it is easier and always works, unlike the debit one).
From this platform (business.facebook.com) you can, amongst other things, view your spending and download the monthly or one-off invoices, according to your frequency of use. You can also invite other people and even agencies to be part of the management of your account and/ or page, such as a digital marketing agency that will help you with the paid advertising only, or with the page management too.
With Facebook Ads you can do several types of advertising, but we like to group them into two separate groups – promotions (of the existing publications or stories) and campaigns (which are not visible in your page’s feed). The latter are usually done with the objective of reaching new audiences or even studying new markets.
Facebook’s Business Manager also has the advantage of aggregating the two main (in Portugal, at least) social media accounts – Facebook and Instagram. All promotions or campaigns can be seen by users on both platforms, FB and Insta (as they are popularly called) and the results are also visible for these two social media.
Now that you know what you need to do Facebook Ads, can you tell if you have a page or a profile?
