Portugal Wins 'Best European Tourist Destination 2019' Portugal has again been awarded the best European Tourist Destination by the World Travel Awards, the Oscars equivalent in the field of tourism. Portugal is growing in popularity every year, winning an impressive 39 prizes this year in various categories, three more than in 2018.

Portugal defeated countries the following countries to win: Austria, England, France, Germany, Greece, Ireland, Italy, Norway, Spain, Sweden, Switzerland and Turkey.

Among the 39 awards won, 24 are at European level and 15 at National level. The tourist board of Portugal, Turismo de Portugal received the award of the best official tourism body.

TAP was awarded the prize of the best airline in Europe due to it's routes to Africa and South America, and was also awarded the prize for best onboard magazine, 'Up Magazine'.

The Quinta do Lago Hotel was voted the best European beach resort and Epic Sana Lisboa was voted the best business hotel. The Monte Santo Resort in Carvoeiro was voted the best 'Romantic European Resort'.

According to the Deputy and Economy Minister, Pedro Siza Vieira, "it is a great pleasure to receive the 'Oscars' of Best European Destination for the third consecutive year. In recent years, Portugal has been a consistently popular destination. The fact that we have won this distinction 3 years in a row shows that our strategy is right, profitable and is consistent."

"It is a special pride to see that once we have been elected Europe's Most Sustainable Destination in March, we will continue to win sustainability awards, as in the Passadiços do Paiva and the Dark Sky Alqueva, we are getting closer and closer to being the most sustainable destination in the world,"the official added in a statement.
