Wildlife Ourique is a Facebook group my husband and I started to share wildlife sightings in our area. On our small plot in Alentejo, we’ve identified 138 species of flower, 134 birds, 24 butterflies, 24 mammals, 10 reptiles and fewer trees, spiders, fungi, moths and amphibians. Every day of every season there’s something new and exciting to observe and learn.
With a global human population of 7.8 billion, up from 3 billion in 1950, development and livestock (global biomass is now 99% humans and livestock, 1% wild animals), wildlife is on the brink of extinction.
With our daily cares and stresses, it’s easy to forget that we need natural biomes for clean air and water, pollination, pest control, nutrient recycling, carbon capture and slowing the rate of climate change.
We are part of nature and nature is fundamental to our survival, so let’s enjoy it!
