The Algarveans held their 2018 AGM on March 25 with record attendance, including seven new members and quite a few potential ones.
The group steams ahead into its 27th year, with a newly elected committee, sporting:
• A new logo
• A new web site with an online booking facility - www.thealgarveans.com
• Updated Facebook page open to all called “The Algarveans “
• Newly designed newsletter, open to all who wish to subscribe with the link found at the bottom of the homepage of the site
• An exciting list of plays and directors for the 2018/2019 season
The society boasts a diverse range of productions, performed in English, and a truly multi-cultural, multi-lingual membership, some of whom have performed across the globe, others with no experience but a willingness to get involved. New members are always welcome, not just on stage but for all the many varied but essential production roles including front of house teams. Maxine Costa, voted into the committee this year, mentioned that she wishes to “encourage and invite younger members into the group”.
The group’s next production, the comedy The Vicar of Dibley, is a stage play by Ian Gower and Paul Carpenter, adapted from the original TV series. Rehearsals are well underway and director Mel Winstanley said, "It’s great fun producing this play, working alongside such a terrific multicultural cast and crew. We have Portuguese, American, Scottish, English, Dutch and Canadians involved.” She continued, “The script is hilarious and it’s great that the charity Comic Relief benefit from the royalties from the show”.
Each year The Algarveans support various charities. In 2017 they donated and installed a new oven for the Portimão soup kitchen and Castelo dos Sonhos in Silves benefitted from baby articles and food. This year The Algarveans will be contributing, together with the Masonic Lodge of Peace and Harmony, towards the renovation of the training room at Lagoa Bombeiros thus enabling the Bombeiros to provide the necessary training for fire-fighters and first aiders.
The Vicar of Dibley will be performed at the Lagoa Auditorium on June 28, 29 and 30, starting at 7.45pm.
Tickets are already available from the Box Office via the website. With the play already proving to be a hit The Algarveans are expecting the show to be a sell out, so book now so as not to be disappointed!
