On Saturday night two members of the St Patrick’s Irish Society of the Algarve turned their garden into a little bit of Ireland in honour of their Ambassador.
Irish Ambassador to Portugal, Her Excellency Anne Webster attended the annual Summer Party of the Society and found the garden had been decorated with green, white and gold balloons and Irish flags; even the table napkins were in the Irish colours.
Ambassador Webster addressed the gathering and thanked the Society, her hosts and the guests for welcoming her so warmly. She also urged all Irish citizens to register with the Embassy so that they could be advised of forthcoming Irish cultural events.
Afterwards the Ambassador and guests enjoyed a beautiful meal of spit-roasted chicken and lamb with salads and potatoes. This was followed by a laden table of the most wonderful desserts prepared by Society members. And, there was lots of Guinness available as well as wine, beer and soft drinks.
Ian Dee led the singing of a few Irish songs before urging people to “dance the night away”.

She spoke about her appointments over the years, and how much she had enjoyed the various challenges these appointments had presented.
Ambassador Webster arrived in Lisbon last September and is finding her present post very rewarding and enjoyable. She feels she has come to a second home as the Portuguese people are so welcoming. Having now visited the Algarve she hopes to come down as often as possible.
