On Thursday 16th June a small contingent from St Patrick’s Society of the Algarve travelled to Lisbon for the annual Bloomsday Celebration. On this day every year the Irish Association (Lisbon) and the Lisbon Players act out scenes from James Joyce’s world famous book, Ulysses.
For some 23 years the Irish Ambassador to Portugal has hosted the event at the Ambassador’s Residence and this year was no exception with Her Excellency Orla Tunney not only hosting the event, but also acting one of the parts.
Although Ulysses is a somewhat difficult read the actors chose excerpts which were easily understood by an audience of several nationalities. We were treated to a fun-filled evening of Irish humour and music followed by a Reception in the Residence.
Chairman Alan Camplin-Smith extended an invitation to the Ambassador to attend the Society’s Summer Party on September 3rd, and she said she would be delighted.
