An afternoon picnic enjoyed by 25 tourists ended with them stranded on Centianes beach, Lagoa when the tide rose.
The group of English, French and German holidaymakers, along with four children, were picnicking at the western side of the beach and simply got cut off.
A lifeboat was called along with a lifeboat service jet-ski but the Maritime Police managed to get them to safety up the steep cliffs.
One English woman, 51, was hit by waves and suffered a dislocated shoulder.
"The tourists had gone to the west side of the beach to have a Saturday picnic and were stranded when the tide rose. Due to swell, only the ISN jet-ski could get to them. They were quite calm and it was decided to wait for the tide to go out before removing them from the beach," according to the captain of Portimão port.
The swimming season is over and Centianes beach has no lifeguard yet the good weather has seen plenty of beach activity despite the autumn swells.
The lifeboat crew based in Sagres rescued two Spanish kayakers three miles north of Cape St. Vincent in the early afternoon of Monday, October 31.
According to the National Maritime Authority, the Spaniards were "unable to return to land on their own, because of fatigue and adverse weather conditions."
The two men were rescued at 15:35, and transported to the port of Baleira showing signs of fatigue and cold.
The Spaniards were 30 years of age, and "due to the adverse weather conditions, after leaving the natural shelter of the cliff, they were quickly swept away by the wind," explained the Maritime Authority.
A man at risk of drowning was rescued off the Tres Pauzinhos beach in Vila Real Santo António, the same beach where a 16-year-old drowned in June.
Vila Real bombeiros arrived at the scene after the bather had been pulled from the water and gave him first aid for cardiac or respiratory arrest. The victim was taken to the Emergency Department Basic in Vila Real de Santo António by an INEM team.
